The baptism of the Holy Spirit is one of the most misunderstood subjects in the Bible due to limited understanding available about it in the Body of Christ. Till date, there are many good believers who still doubt the credibility of tongues. Some others who believe in it and eagerly thirst for it lack the basic understanding as to the means of receiving. Speaking in tongues is not something you learn as if you are learning a new language; it is a gift of the Holy Spirit.

I pray that the eyes of your understanding will be enlightened to understand this mystery as I share these misconceptions with you.

1. I Don’t Have to Speak In Tongues. Mark 16:17 (NKJV), Acts 2:4, Acts 10: 44-46.

Jesus made it clear that speaking in tongues is a sign. It is a sign that should follow ALL that believes in the name of Jesus. It is not a sign for Men of God alone but for every man and woman that have confessed Jesus Christ as his or her saviour. If Jesus said speaking in tongues is a sign, why would you reject a manifestation that should be a distinguishing sign for ALL who believe in Him?

2. The Language Is Gibberish! 1Cor 14:1

There is nothing awkward or odd about it. Just because you do not understand a human language does not make it odd or inferior. In the same way, the fact that you do not understand what is spoken in tongues does not make it awkward or irrelevant.

3. Something Will Hold My Tongue and Speak for Me. Acts 2:4

Notice the words: As the Spirit gave them utterance. It implies that the disciples themselves spoke in tongues according to what the Holy Spirit puts on their lips to say. They didn’t frame up what they were saying and the Holy Spirit too did not just twist their tongues against their will. The Holy Ghost never violates your will and takes you over.

4. Expectation of Some Special Signs, Feelings or Visions. Acts 2:3-4, Acts 10:44.

Expecting some special signs, feelings or visions to speak in tongues is Biblically wrong. It is not just wrong, it is also dangerous because demons can easily manipulate you if that is what you are looking for. You won’t receive anything if you are waiting for any special sign or feeling. These manifestations may or may not come.

5. The Misconception of Wrong Teaching.

Once your knowledge of a blessing is faulty, you cannot enjoy that blessing to its fullest measure. Believing a lie with sincerity will not change it into truth, and only the truth will set you free. Not only that, only the truth that is known in its accurate form can totally set free. A faulty knowledge of the truth is as dangerous as a lack of knowledge of the truth.

Here are some of the wrong teachings on the baptism in the Holy Spirit predominant in Christendom:

  • When you are born again, you are simultaneously baptized with the Holy Spirit. John 4:13-15, John 7:37-39.
  • Speaking in tongues is not the evidence of being FILLED but fruits of the Spirit. Eph 5:18
  • You have to be super holy before you can be baptized.
  • You don’t have to speak in tongues all the time.

6. Wrong Methods of Receiving The Holy Ghost. Luke 11:11-13

Some of the wrong methods of receiving the Holy Ghost include repeating the tongues someone else is speaking or copying part of the tongues of some people with the hope that yours will come.

7. The Gift of Diverse Kinds of Tongues. 1 Corinthians 12:28 -30 (KJV)

The lack of understanding of the difference between the gift of the diverse kinds of tongues and speaking in tongues has hindered many people from receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit. The gift of diverse kinds of tongues is a gift of the Holy Spirit subsequent to the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Only a person who has first been baptized with the Holy Spirit can receive the gift of diverse kinds of tongues. The prayer language is the personal manifestation that is given to all those who are baptized with the Holy Spirit.

8. Receiving the Holy Ghost.

There is no Biblical claim that some believers received the baptism in the Holy Spirit without the accompanying sign of speaking with tongues. All it takes to be a good Christian is to constantly yield to the Holy Spirit, and every born again person has the Holy Spirit in a measure. However, the full measure comes when you are baptized in the Holy Ghost. Yes, you certainly don’t have to speak with tongues to be a good Christian, but you can’t experience much of the miraculous power of God without the Biblical baptism in the Holy Ghost.
